Hero Dogs in the Military
Military service animals have helped soldiers for over 100 years. In World War I, a dog named Sgt. Stubby warned troops of gas attacks and found wounded men. In modern wars like Iraq and Afghanistan, dogs are trained to find bombs, help patrol, and protect their handlers. One famous dog, Cairo, helped Navy SEALs in the mission to find Osama bin Laden. These animals are brave, smart, and loyal. Many live with soldiers after their service and are treated like heroes.
Vocabulary
wounded – injured in battle
patrol – keep watch over (an area) by regularly walking or traveling around or through it.
